Credit Card Beginner's Guide

What is a credit line?

A credit line is a loan that can be used to pay bills and make purchases either online or in stores. The beauty of opening a credit line is that you can make purchases now and pay later. Every month your credit issuer will send you a statement of your credit balance. You will have the option to either pay it off in full or make smaller minimum payments. Your minimum monthly payments will be determined by the amount of credit you have used and your APR (Annual Percentage Rate). Many credit card companies also offer rewards and incentives to their members. Credit cards can be used as a tool to build your credit history and increase your credit score.

What is APR?

APR stands for Annual Percentage Rate. It refers to a yearly interest rate that is charged for a loan and is often expressed in the form of a percentage. It is essentially the price you pay to borrow money. It is important to check the APR rates when shopping for a new credit line, especially if you decide to make minimum payments. However, if you plan to pay your balance in full and on time every month, then the APR doesn’t really matter too much. If you have the means to pay off your balance in full, then it is suggested to look for credit lines that offer benefits and perks so you can be rewarded as you build credit.

What is a credit score?

A credit score is a measurement of how likely someone will pay back their debt. Credit scores range from 300 – 850. A higher score makes it easier to qualify for certain loans, such as credit cards, mortgages, and auto loans. You can request a copy of your credit report from a credit bureau.
